Emily Freeman, EMS Program Administrator; Denver Dept. of Public Health & Environment; City & County of Denver

Emily Freeman is the Program Administrator for the City & County of Denver's ISO 14001:2015 certified Environmental Management System (EMS). Denver remains the only city in North America to have all departments certified in the EMS. In this role, Emily utilizes the ISO 14001:2015 Standard to guide Denver, its 12,000+ employees, and contractors to reduce environmental impacts, identify best practices to improve operations, and develop strategic plans to achieve their environmental and sustainability performance goals.

 

Emily concurrently serves as the Vice-Chair on Colorado's Pollution Prevention Advisory Board Assistance Committee, where she encourages entrepreneurship and innovation in material diversion and end-market development by managing $2.7 million in grants, and has helped create 350+ new jobs across Colorado in the past 3 years. In 2018, Emily was one of ten American delegates on the TOMODACHI-Mitsui & Co. Leadership Program where she spent 10 days in Japan connecting with leaders in government, non-profits, and the private sector to foster relations between the U.S. and Japan.

 

Prior to these roles, she worked as a Sustainability Consultant and Program Manager in municipal recycling quality assurance and program expansion for Waste Management, Inc. Emily has dedicated her career to improving the environment through sustainability strategies to preserve the world for future generations.

 

Emily earned her a M.S. in Sustainability from Arizona State University. She is also a certified ISO 14001:2015 Lead Auditor, a Colorado Class A & B UST System Operator, and holds the Global Reporting Index (GRI) certification. Outside work she is an avid cyclist, enjoys hiking with her husband and dog, and is active in various Japanese-American associations.
